Extra Virgin Olive Oil — 750ml Retail

01 The sourcing brief

A major Israeli retail chain needed a reliable European source for extra virgin olive oil in 750ml and 500ml glass bottles. Chief Rabbinate kosher certification was non-negotiable. Private label production was required — their own brand, their own label, their pricing. The volume: approximately 18 containers per year across both formats. The timeline: first shipment within one season. The constraint: the supplier needed to already hold BRC or IFS certification, have experience exporting to Israel or similar kosher-sensitive markets, and be willing to work at retail price points — not premium positioning. Origin preference was Mediterranean — Spain, Italy, or Greece — both for quality perception and for the practical advantage of shorter lead times into Ashdod port.

02 The market challenge

Olive oil looks simple until you are sourcing it for the Israeli market. The first problem is kosher. Chief Rabbinate certification on olive oil is not universal — many excellent Spanish and Italian producers have never sought it, either because they did not have Israeli customers or because they did not understand the certification pathway. Finding a BRC-certified producer with active kosher certification and private label capability narrows the field dramatically. The second problem is pricing. Israeli retail is price-competitive. Buyers know what olive oil costs. Producers who price for the premium export market — the UK, Germany, the US — are often not viable for Israeli mainstream retail. The margin conversation happens early, or it does not happen at all. The third problem is labeling. Israeli food labeling law requires Hebrew text, specific nutritional panel formats, and country of origin declarations that differ from EU standard. Producers who have never exported to Israel often underestimate the preparation required.

03 What we validated

For each producer in this category we verified seven things before making any introduction. Kosher certification — active, not expired, Chief Rabbinate or equivalent. We requested the certificate directly and confirmed validity with the certifying body. BRC or IFS grade — minimum BRC Grade A or IFS Higher. We reviewed the most recent audit report. Private label capability — confirmed minimum order quantities per SKU, label lead time, and whether the producer could meet Israeli label specifications including Hebrew text placement. Glass bottle formats — 750ml and 500ml. Not every producer runs both. We confirmed line availability and MOQ per format. Export experience — prior shipments to kosher-sensitive markets. Producers with existing Israeli or US kosher market experience move faster and make fewer mistakes. Pricing — confirmed ex-works pricing against the buyer's target landed cost to Ashdod, including freight estimates. Shelf life — minimum 18 months from production. Israeli retailers require this as a condition of listing.

04 What we found

The best sources for this category are Spain and Italy, in that order. Spanish producers — particularly from Andalusia and Castilla-La Mancha — offer the most competitive pricing with consistently high BRC grades. Several have existing Chief Rabbinate certification and active experience exporting to Israeli importers. Volumes are not a problem. The challenge is finding producers willing to do private label at retail-competitive pricing rather than positioning their oil as a premium export product. Italian producers bring stronger brand perception and often more complex flavor profiles, which matters for premium retail positioning. The kosher certification landscape in Italy is improving — more producers are seeking Chief Rabbinate certification as Israeli demand grows. Pricing is higher than Spain but justified for mid-premium and premium shelf positioning. Greek producers are an emerging option — excellent quality, competitive pricing, and a growing number of BRC-certified exporters. Kosher certification penetration is lower than Spain but increasing. The sweet spot for Israeli mainstream retail is a Spanish or Italian producer with active Chief Rabbinate certification, BRC Grade A, and genuine private label experience. They exist — but they are not on the first page of a Google search.

05 Key takeaways

Chief Rabbinate kosher is available from Spanish and Italian producers — but you need to ask specifically. Not every certified producer advertises it. Private label minimum orders start at 1 container (approximately 1,100 cases of 750ml). Below that, pricing becomes unviable for retail. Shelf life is 24 months from production for most Mediterranean EVOO. Plan your import cycle around this — two to three shipments per year is typical for 18-container annual volumes. BRC Grade A or IFS Higher is achievable from both Spanish and Italian sources. Do not accept Grade B for major retail chain listings — buyers will ask. Lead time from order confirmation to Ashdod port: 6 to 8 weeks for Spain, 8 to 10 weeks for Italy including kosher supervision scheduling.ⓘ
